Key Stage 1

Writing

  • Sequence sentences to create short narratives.

  • Plan writing by verbalising thoughts.

  • Write for various purposes: letters, diary entries, poems.

  • Correct, add to, and proofread their writing.

Grammar

  • Understand statements, exclamations, commands, and questions.

  • Use correct punctuation, capital letters, and finger spaces.

  • Join words and clauses with and, or, but, because.

  • Use expanded noun phrases (e.g., the blue butterfly).

  • Use past and present tense correctly.

Handwriting

  • Form lowercase and uppercase letters correctly.

  • Begin to join letters.

Key Stage 2

Your child will be taught to:

Reading

  • Read words automatically.

  • Decode words quickly and silently.

  • Discuss characters' feelings and motives in text predict what might happen next

  • Read further exception words.

Spelling

  • Use dictionaries to check the meanings and spellings of words.

  • Use further prefixes and suffixes.

  • Recognize and use additional homophones.

  • Place the possessive apostrophe accurately in words with regular and some irregular plurals.

Writing

  • Use commas after fronted adverbials.

  • Punctuate direct speech correctly.

  • Use adverbs and prepositions.

  • Extend sentences with words like when, if, because, although.

  • Organise writing with headings and subheadings.

  • Check for spelling and punctuation mistakes and suggest improvements.

Spoken Language

  • Participate in discussions and debates.

  • Justify answers, arguments, and opinions.

  • Consider and evaluate different viewpoints.
